Beer
Sir,—Your correspondent, “Analysis,” says complainants overlook that breweries ere in business to make money, but when this monopoly pays the shareholders 84 per cent, and carries forward £528.434 it is time they gave the public a better product. All this business of showing technicians in white coats behind a lot of test tubes and instruments does not interest most beer drinkers as long as they get good wholesome beer. “Analysis” mentions wasteage allowance being generous. It used to be 10 per cent, which was never used. I do not know what it is now. As “Hoplessly Mild” points out the upward trend of liquor sales does not necessarily indicate growing popularity but that the public have been successfully herded.—Yours, etc.. BEER DRINKER. September 1. 1960.
Sir. —May I thank "Never Been Better” for his sympathy, though I confess that it would improve my spirits tremendously to feel that the claims he makes in defence of the present-day "uniform” brew were more accurate than his rendering of my nom-de-plume. While making full allowance for the undiscerning though enthusiastic drinker, I commend his attention to the European beers mentioned in my previous letter. Nothing soupy there! But plainly the result of a brewer's art well applied. I agree that much of the new liquor can be consumed without distressing after-effects (immediate and distressing ones, at any rate) for, after all, I did describe it as wishy-washy. But what of that? The same thing applies to sterilised ditchwater, or “pop.”—Yours, etc., HOPLESSLY MILD. September 2, 1960.
