LAND LOST BY EXPANSION

Staff Shortages Prevent Survey

<Neu> Heatana Press Araodutionj. AUCKLAND, August 28. The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) has told the Auckland Regional Planning Authority that a survey of potential loss of productive land to urban expansion can not be done because of Shortage of staff. Last September the authority wrote to the Minister pointing out that in the next 20 years the population would increase by about 1,000,000. With proper planning only 100,000 acres of present productive land need be lost. Poorly planned, the loss could be an additional 50,000 acres of this total, while with no planning at all, 200,000 acres could be used in urban sprawl.

Mr F. W. O. Jones, director of regional planning in Auckland, told the authority yesterday that in conjunction with and in support of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority the approach on the land-loss issue had also been made to the Ministers of Agriculture and Housing.
