CANTERBURY WINS

6-2 Score Over R.N.Z.A.F. In b laateh wMeh kecame onesided 1b tbe later stages, the Csntertnry represeatative soccer team beat R.NJBAJ'. comfortably by t roato to 2«• Saturday. At no stage ot the same did the R.NJE.A.F. team look a match-winning combination, although several of the players made fine individual efforts. Sound teamwork and good positional play assured Canterbury of a feast of the ball. The lively forward line dominated play, especially in the second spelL The defence was guilty of loose marking, and the goalkeeper, B. Plant, bore the brunt of Canterbury’s attacks. In the circumstances he made some grand saves and cleared effectively. At left-back, L. Hurd was the best of the R.N.Z.A.F. defenders, and with good cover defence from the. left-half, K. Sudlow, kept a tight rein on the Canterbury right flank. Sudlow also played well on attack, and it was his combination with the hard-working side left, S. McClory, that caused most concern for the Canterbury defence. The centre-forward, E. Griffin, showed little of the form that won his New Zealand honours a few years ago. E. Jones tried hard at inside right and on occasions combined well with his outside man, J. Summers.

Always Safe In goal for Canterbury, J. Callaghan was always safe, although never under severe pressure. M. Shardlow was the more impressive of the full-backs and. as a measure of Canterbury’s superiority, he made frequent excursions into the attack in the final stages of play. D. Simmonds, the Canterbury centre-half, proved a constant stumbling block to the R.N.ZA..F. mid-field attacks and he distributed the ball intelligently. At left-half, H. Taylor began many Canterbury attacks and linked up well with the inside-left T. Haydon, who was outstanding in the forward line. Haydon always attempted to open up play and was ably supported by the industrious W. Yates at inside right. On the left wing, D. Worthington often beat his marker and centred effectively, but J. Price, on the right flank, was well held by Hurd for most of the match. Canterbury took the lead after eight minutes when Haydon scored the goal of the match. He received the ball in mid-fleld, moved forward at top speed and. slammed a powerful 40-yard drive which deflected into goal off the upright, giving Plant no chance of saving. R.N.Z.A.F. settled down more, but Yates put Canterbury further ahead when he headed in a short cross from Rennell. McClory caught Callaghan out of position when he received a long pass and. scored with a neat angled shot, th reduce Canterburys’ margin. Canterbury soon regained the Initiative, however, and Rennell scored two good goals to give the home team a 4-1 lead at half-time.

Keeping on the pressure, Yates and Worthington added further goals for Canterbury early in the second spell. Play deteriorated in the closing stages and R.N.ZA.F. scored against the run of play when Griffen beat Callaghan with a snap shot from a goal-mouth melee. Mr J. A. Davidson was referee.
