WORK ON NEW RAILWAY
Farmers Petition House (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 2. A petition urging cessation of all work other than essential surveys along the Pelorus BridgeKaituna section of the proposed Nelson to Blenheim railway was presented to the House of Representatives today by Mr T. P. Shand (Opposition, Marlborough) The petition, in the names of Cedric Horace Prince and 50 others, described as farmers in the area, said that the effect of construction through Pelorus Bridge-Kaituna properties would be disastrous, as the proportion of good arable land in the area was extremely small, and loss of even part of it, including bisection for railway construction work, would do damage far in excess of the intrinsic value of the land. Some of the properties would be ruined for all practical purposes. The petitioners claimed that part of the route was relatively flat and presented no major construction problem, and it could be completed in a relatively short time from commencement of construction. They said that delay in commencing construction on that section would not adversely affect the date of completion of the whole project, and would permit profitable farming operations to be continued in the meantime. The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) was asked at question time how he reconciled a statement that the Ministry of Works was preparing to call tenders for the Nelson railway with a second statement that “now the bill is passed engineers can move on to private property for test borings and detailed survey.”
