U.S. Reply To Russia
WASHINGTON. August 1. A Soviet assertion that the continued presence of Belgian troops in the Congo would endanger world peace was described by the State Department today as “recklessly irresponsible.” “The Soviet leaders must be aware that this kind of public statement can only add to the problems of those who are seriously trying to restore peace and order in the Congo,” the department said. • “The Soviet Union apparently abrogates to itself the right to judge whether the United Nations is acting with sufficient speed in the extremely difficult situation in the Congo,” the statement said. Laver Wins,—R. Laver, of Australia, won the Pennsylvania lawn tennis men’s singles championship today with a 9-7, 8-6, 6-3 victory over R. Holmberg, of New York, in the final.—Haverford, August 1.
