INTERTRIBAL FIGHTING
More Strife In Congo LEOPOLDVILLE, August 1. Mutilated corpses were strewn through villages in Kasii Province after inter-tribal bow and arrow battles, it was reported today Mounting reports of bloody clashes in the Congo interior dimmed prospects for an early end to the nation’s strife, American Associated Press reported. Belgian officials in the Congolese capital spoke of “hundreds of dead” in the savage battles in Kasai Province. They said the latest clashes between the traditionally hostile Luiua and Baluba tribes are among the worst in the Congo’s history. A United Nations spokesman said there were no plans at present to reinforce Tunisian United Nations forces in Kasai Province, Reuters reported. The spokesman said United Nations forces had no mandate to intervene directly in domestic Congolese disputes. Balubas and Luluas have fought each other for hundreds of years, but were kept comparatively quiet under Belgian rule. After independence, however, the Belgians left and the Congolese Force Publique collapsed.
