Beri Cup Won By Waimate (From Our Own Reporter) , TIMARU, July 31. The Waimate team, winners of the Skinner Cup this season, added the Beri Cup to its honours list this season, with a 13-3 win over Zingari at Waimate on Saturday. Waimate led, 5-3, at half-time, and warded off a determined second-half attack by Zingari. In the later stages pf the match M. D. Watson kicked a good penalty, and the Waimate three-quarters, W. Medlicott, scored a try after a splendid combined movement. Watson’s conversion of this try gave Waimate a clear-cut points-winning margin. , . In the first half Waimate had been awarded a penalty try which Watson converted, and Zingari’s points were from a try by I. O’Connor. In the main match at Fraser Park on Saturday, Old Boys beat Celtic, 20-19, in a game which provided some bright Rugby. Celtic was unlucky, scoring five tries, two of which were converted, to Old Boys two tries and four penalties and a conversion. The player who saved Old Boys from defeat was the fullback, R. Barlow, who contributed 14 points with his kicking and opened up the way for Old Boys winning try two minutes from fulltime. Trailing 8-9 at half-time, Celtic seemed, to have a firm grasp on the game with the score at 14-9 in its favour after 16 minutes in the second half, and indeed, at this stage it was only bad luck which robbed Celtic of further tries. With the forwards winning a good share of the ball from rucks and line-outs, the Celtic backs swept into action in several smart movements which Old Boys found difficult to counter. In the first half. M. Fitzgerald and J. O’Donnell scored tries for Celtic, Fitzgerald’s being converted by P. Hogan, but two penalties by Barlow and a try by M. Gray gave Old Boys a 9-8 lead at half-time. In the second half, Barlow kicked two more penalties, and two minutes from time. H. Morley scored a try which Barlow converted. Celtic’s points in the second half were from tries by W. Harding, M. Keenan and R Stoddart. Stoddart was in fine form in the Celtic backs and was the engineer of many of the attacks. Old Boys best . backs were the second five-eighths. P. O’Shaughnessy, and Barlow at full-back. Barlow cleared Old Boys from defensive positions with many raking touch-finders, and he was the key man in Old Boys final try. He moved into the attack and beat off several tackles in a splendid midfield run before passing to R. Currie, who gave Morley a clear run in. In the first match at Fraser Park. Star had its second win of the season with an 8-6 victory over Mackenzie.

Waikato Beats, Counties (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. July 31. After appearing to have the game well in. hand after two quick tries after half-time, Waikato spent the last 20 minutes of the match against Counties at Waiuku on Saturday in desperate defence. It was only saved from a draw by the fact that P. T. Walsh, the Counties captain, missed a conversion from right in front. Waikato won 8-6. The first score was a penalty goal by Walsh for Counties. Although it trailed 0-3 at half-time, Waikato had spent more time on attack than the Counties. In the first few minutes pf the second half. J. R. Wood ran the blind In the first minute to send away J. A. S. McKenzle. who in-passed to D. S. Clarke for a fine try. The crowd had hardly settled back In its seats before Wood was around the side, again, and, after a brilliant dash up the middle of the field, he dipped a pan to his brother, D. R. Wood, who dived over under the post. D. G. Clarke converted. In the twenty-fifth minute Barry, the Counties No. 8. kicked infield to start a movement which sent C.
