SHARES IN ESTATES
£Bm Administered By Public Trust The increasing popularity of stock exchange investments is reflected in the assets of estates administered by the Public Trust Office. In the year ended March 31, the total value of shareholdings in estates administered by the office was approaching £Bm, says the office’s annual report. “Shares are not authorised trustee investments but frequently the will or other trust instrument gives the trustee a discretion or a direction to retain them provided proper indemnities and’ safeguards can be arranged,” says the report. “Careful consideration is given to problems associated with share investments, including the disposal or taking up of rights, the selection of investments for sale where a proportion is required to be released, and selection of a favourable time to sell. “To this end it is necessary for the Public Trustee to watch closely company developments and share-market trends and to keep all shareholdings under constant review,” says the report.
