ASHBURTON ROAD SIGNS
Concern Expressed By A.A.C. Road signs placed three miles and a half on either side of Ashburton could give motorists the wrong impression, according to the Automobile Association (Canterbury) so the organisation has written to the local council about them. A meeting of the A.A.C. council was told about the signs by the president (Mr E. R. Casbolt). He said the signs read, “Righthand rule applies over the next 3J miles” on one side and “Thank you for your courtesy” on- the other. Mr Casbolt said the association secretary (Mr E. S. Palliser) had written to the Ashburton town clerk pointing out that motorists might think the right-hand rule ceased after the section of the road covered by the signs. “Signs of this nature are extremely dangerous, particularly for any one borough to erect them,” Mr Casbolt said. Mr E. C. Champion suggested that the Ashburton Borough Council was not deliberately defying the road code, but was perhaps acting unwisely. The council endorsed the secretary’s action in writing to the council about the signs.
