N.Z. CUMBERS IN ANDES
Expedition From City Last Year The recent report that a Southland party was New Zealand's first successful expedition to the Andes was not correct, according! to Mr D. Mackay, the father ofi Donald Mackay, a member of a. Christchurch group of climbers' who made successful ascents in the Andes last year. The others in the Christchurch party were Mr and Mrs M. Nelson and John Tothill. Mr Nelson was the expedition leader. Messrs Tothill, Mackay and Nelson attended Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, five years ago. The party climbed Mount Huascaran, 23,380 ft, the highest mountain in Peru, Yanapaccha, 17,750 ft, and the virgin Pisco East, just under 19,000 ft, said Mr Mackay. - “The party is again in training, this time for attempts on unclimbed mountains in the Yukon in September of this year,” Mr Mackay said.
