THREE-LANE ROAD
Harper Avenue Experiment
Harper avenue, between Carlton Mill bridge and Fendalton road, will be used for the first experiment with a three-lane road in Christchurch. The DeputyMayor (Cr. H. P. Smith) said the City Council traffic committee had been considering the idea for some time. If the experiment proved a success it would be tried in other suitable areas in the city. The particular area had been chosen because there were no side streets, very little parking along the avenue and the width of the road. The avenue would be divided into three lanes, the centre lane to be used for overtaking. “In introducing the scheme we are trying to ensure that slow drivers keep to the left, so that drivers overtaking can do so in safety,’’ he ,said. The City Council’s traffic superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said the scheme would begin as soon as the city engineer’s department had supplied the traffic department with more information on the road as Harper avenue had a steep crown and this had to be taken into consideration when marking the lanes. As soon as the information was available the lanes would be marked out, he said.
