Treason Trial In Hungary
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BUDAPEST, July 27, A taxi-driver from West Germany told a military tribunal today that he was “recruited” by United States intelligence services and sent to Hungary on an espionage mission. The man, 32-year-old Karoly Heidt, pleaded guilty to treason at Hungary’s first public spy trial for six years. Heidt was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. \ Heidt said his mission was to recruit two men in Hungary who were to carry out spying activities, supplying information on rocket launching sites north of Lake Balaton, in western Hungary. One of these two men told the tribunal he had never met the accused, and expressed consternation that his name had been given as a contact. The other man is in a clinic and was not called as a witness.
