PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL
Tenders For Gymnasium “Plans for a gymnasium for Papanui High School should be ready by early August," said the chairman of the board of governors (Mr O. C. Mitchell) at a meeting on Thursday. A telegram authorising the calling of tenders was received from the Education Department. The board decided tq notify five or six selected tenderers. “With open tendering one feels obliged to accept the lowest tenderer, who may not necessarily be the best builder,” said Mr Mitchell. “It would also save a considerable amount of time.” “The Parent-Teacher Association hopes to have sufficient money in hand by the time the gymnasium is far enough advanced to be able to finance the addition of changing rooms and shower rooms,” said Mr R. C. Chilvers. The board agreed that plans be prepared for shower and changing rooms on the understanding that they would be an addition to the contract of the successful tenderer, provided the works committee was notified. The architect will be asked to supply rough drawings of the shower and changing rooms so that preliminary estimates can be given by the tenderers. Mr Mitchell said he expected the gymnasium to be built in about three weeks after construction began. The principal (Mr L. B. Newton) said it would be timely to have the gymnasium ready for, the school’s twenty-fifth anniversary 3d May next year.
