ATTACK ON SOCIALISM

Eisenhower Hits At Sweden (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CHICAGO, July 27. President Eisenhower dropped a bombshell into the Republican convention by attacking socialism in terms which indicated that his primary target was a proWestern European country— Sweden. The President was appealing for the election of a new Republican Administration and the continuation of his own “middle-of-the-road” philosophy. He called on the new leadership of the Republican Party to keep away from the gutters of the extreme Left and Right and to walk in the middle of the road. Then he said that he wanted to mention the “almost complete paternalism in a fairly friendly European country. This country has a tremendous record for Socialistic operation and following the Socialist philosophy,” he said.

“The record shows that their rate of suicide has gone up almost unbelievably. I think their suicide rate used to be almost the lowest in the world but now they have almost twice tha* rate. Drunkenness has gone up and a lack of moderation is discernible on all sides.” The President called on the Republican Party to avoid copying “that kind of example” and to follow Abraham Lincoln’s admonition that the Government should do for people only those things which the people could not do for themselves.
