DRAMA LEAGUE FESTIVAL
Third Programme The strongest play presented in the third programme of the British Drama League festival at the Repertory Theatre last evening was undoubtedly “The House of Bernarda Alba.” Although only two acts were given, the climax of the play was implied, and an atmosphere of tension was created. “The House of Bernarda Alba” was played by actresses from the Catholic Women’s League drama group. The cast is numerous, and, as might be expected, the leveliof ability shown varied considerably. The leading parts, however, were admirably acted, and the performances given by Essie Clark, Diane Jack, Margaret Osborne, Teresa Fitzgerald and Peggy Kerkvliet were warmly praised by Mrs Nancy Russell, who is acting as judge during this festival The Religious Drama Society offered a play which showed the artistic skill of the producer and a consistently high level of acting ability. The setting and costumes for “The House by the Stable” were good; the actors spoke their lines with discretion as well as feeling, so that the play was a pleasure both to see and to hear. Mention should be made of the work of Margaret Swarbrick, Joan Larsen, Keith Cooke and Paul Goddard.
Two comedies, each with a French setting, made a contrast witb the plays just described. “The Parpot Assassination” was acted by the Elmwood Players, and here Mrs Russell was impressed by the performances of Mai Willers, Lillian Charlton and Veronica Rushton.
The programme concluded with “Sales Lady.” The Shirley Players, a B grade team, gave an agreeable performance of a play which is perhaps a trifle lacking in substance. The festival will be concluded at the Repertory Theatre this evening, when the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr G. Manning, will present trophies to the prizewinning groups. —C.E.S.
