N.Z. PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
Better Lighting Urged
Adequate and distinctive lighting over authorised pedestrian crossings has been urged by the South Island Motor Union for a long time, and it will protest to the Commissioner of Transport about the delay in a decision. Earlier the union had stated that ordinary- street lights did not illuminate crossings properly find a suggestion was made that, say. an amber light would clearly indicate the approach to a crossing. The latest' inquiry < received the answer that the Standards Institute street illumination committee had not yet published its report and the findings were not expected for several months. “This matter has been on the slate for two years and it could'be one of life and death,” said Mr T. E. V. Turpiq (Otago). “The motorist is in real difficulties because he can’t see pedestrian crossings at night, particularly in wet weather, and is often in trouble on unfamiliar roads.” On his suggestion the union agreed to protest.
