POSITION IN AUSTRALIA
Otago Languages Lecturer (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 29. Thirty-nine-year-old Dr. Rex. Barrell, of the University of Otago, has been appointed senior lecturer in modern languages at Monash University, Melbourne. Dr. Barrell, who is married with one child, holds a similar position at Otago. He was edu-
cated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and at Canterbury University. Dr. Barrell gained a doctorate in comparative literature at Paris University in 1951. During World War II he served in the New Zealand territorial forces and did radio-physics study for the Army. Dr. Barrell’s first appointment was lecturer in modern languages at Otago. In 1957 he was promoted to senior lecturer. The same year he was awarded a Nuffield Foundation travelling fellowship and was attached to University London, as a research assistant.
