Films
Sir, —Surely we may judge for ourselves which Continental films are suitable for New Zealand screenings. If such comedies as that rather offensive “La Ronde” can be shown here, why are we not permitted to see such meritorious European attractions as France’s "Les Amants,” which has reaped prizes at film festivals the world over, "Ankitet,” “Smiles of a Summer Night.” and other . films by the Swedish director, Ingmar Bergman, whose* screen classics have earned approval from critics of all nations. I wholeheartedly agree with “Film Fan,” despite the local cinema manager’s assertions. Films screened over two years ago cannot be classed as "recent.” —Yours, etc., WILD STRAWBERRY. July 28, 1960.
Sir, —In reply to “Film Fan.” may I, a constant film fan, point out that this is an election year and Christchurch is only one city of this country. Perhaps the writer could try the Oxford Theatre in Auckland (if a single person) for accepted entertainments.—Yours, etc., PHOSSY. July 18, 1960.
