Bus Service To Airport Reduced By Authority

. The closing of the Harewood transit camp and the extension of the Christchurch Transport Board's service up Memorial' avenue had led to the Midland Motorways Services, Ltd.'s application to delete its week-end trips and some other trips between Christchurch and the airport. uid Mr W. F. Brown at a hearing before the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. fiaywood) yesterday. It was a matter of regret the service had to be curtailed, but the poor patronage gave the company no alternative. The presence of Russley Golf Club meant there would be no housing development at the top of Memorial avenue, said the company's traffic manager (Mr R. C Wasley), The Authority granted the application to withdraw all services on Saturdays and Sundays. Tasman Rental Cars (Christchurch). Ltd. (Mr W. F. Brown) was granted an amendment to its rental vehicle licence to add three rental trucks, these to be fully equipped seven-ton oil fuel tank trucks for lease on long terms. The distribution officer of the Standard-Vacuum Oil Company (Mr J. L. McPhail) said his company would hire the trucks. “I can only consider what the situation is at present, not what has happened or is likely to happen,’* said the Authority, granting an application by Midland Motorways to extend its route from North road via Daniels road, Dunedin street, Munro street and Daniels road to the North road The Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. G. Hutchison), objected to the application on the grounds that the Christchurch Tramways Bill at present before the House of Representatives would bring extended routes into the board's area. Mr Hutchison suggested the application should be held over until the bill had been dealt with by Parliament. “If the bill Is passed the board should have prior rights in the area, and indeed would have a duty to provide a service.” he submitted. Mr Brown said it was evident the board did not know if the bill would be passed and as his clients were prepared to begin a service immediately the application should be granted. The Authority granted William Lance Heron, of Kaiapoi, a goods service licence to carry racehorses owned or trained by him and his son, to South Island meetings.

Midland Motorways was granted an amendment to its passenger service licence to delete from the Christchurch-Chaney s route via Marshland road the following trips: from Christchurch 3.50 p.m., Mon-

day to Friday. 9.18 p.m. Friday from Chaneys, 948 »m. Tn artsy to Friday, 4.15 pm. Monday to Friday. An application by a Ijrttalton car. rtar. John Alexander Edife (Mr F. G. BUI) for an additional vehicle authority . was declined by the Authority. Mr J. A. Bretherton objected on behalf of Mitchell Brothers and two Lyttelton carriers.
