SPECTACULAR GAME

Spirited Finish By Students

[From F. W. BOSHIER, Sports Editor of the “Evening Post* Wellington, by arrangement with the N.Z.PA.] EAST LONDON* July 27. The fastest, most spectacular game on the tour gave the AU Blacks a 21-12 victory over Central Universities. At one stage the All Blacks were leading 8-6 and had scored only one try to their opponents* two. Then the tourists, with their most brilliant football so far, rattled on the points to lead 21-6, but a spirited finishing effort by the students—whose play was always full of dash and enterprise—earned them two more tries. The last one was typical of how the Universities were constantly trying to think up something to outwit the opposition. Awarded a penalty, they took a short kick when the All Blacks and touch judges expected a shot at goal. Twd or three quick transfers and nippy D. Van Niekerk, who was always the live wire, was across near the flag. It could scarcely have been a more fitting finish to a match in which the AH Blacks never wholly commanded the initiative, but still earned repeated applause for scintillating exchanges. Both sides went to it with a will and the baH spun hither and yon with backs and forwards dropping all distinctions. R. J. Urbahn had much to do with the All Black effort, and so did S. G. Bremner whenever he forgot to kick. T. R. Lineen and K. F. Laidlaw were in dashing form, with R. W. Caulton and J. R. Watt playing their full share. Watt produced at least one more “out of the blue” save. The All Black forwards, many of whom were soon puffed, deserved credit for sticking to it. E. A. R. Pickering, H. C. Burry, M. W. Irwin, and E. J. Anderson all showed up at different times, but R. J. Conway had handling lapses.
