OLD PLOUGH ON SHOW
There Will be an old single furrow swing plough more than 100 years old at the New Zealand ploughing championships at Washdyke tomorrow.
The old plough, which is now a family museum piece, is being brought to the match by Mr S. B. Wooding, son of Mr M. L. Wooding of Woodbury. A Howard New Patent No. 3 made by Howard Bedford it was brought out to New Zealand from England in 1856 by the late Mr T. P. Wooding, the great grandfather of Mr S. B. Wooding. The pioneer Wooding used it first at Woodend where he began farming. In 1872 he took it with him to Woodbury where he took up an 800 acre property and used it there to break in fern and tussock country.
The old plough was generally pulled by two horses. It is being given a coat of paint for its outing this week and if Mr Wooding can find or make a share for it, it may be workable.
A 1926 18-36 model Hart Parr tractor is also being brought to Washdyke by Mr Wooding. It was bought by his father, Mr M. L Wooding and his brothers, Messrs H. J. and R. A. Wooding in 1928 and is still operative. The old tractor with steel wheels and spade lugs weigh three and a half tons and has its two-cylinder horizontal piston engine set across the chassis. It has an unusual lubrication system.
