N.Z. PERFORMERS FOR TV
Role Of Competitions
Societies
With the coming of television to New Zealand there was a necessity for competitions societies to look ahead to a new challenge, said Mr C. H. Plimmer, retiring president of the Christchurch Competitions Society, at the annual meeting last evening. During the next few years there would be an increased demand for high-class performers in the entertainment field.
“A society such as ours can act as a valuable nursery for the training of new talents,” said Mr Plimmer. “It will, however, need a great deal of public support to fulfil this function.” Judges for the next festival of the society, ■in May, 1961, were announced. They are: speech, Mrs Oliver, of Dunedin; vocal, Miss B. Rawlinson, of Dunedin; instrumental, Mr F. Robb, of Wellington; ballet and tap-dancing, Miss J. Lewis, of Lower Hutt, and national dancing, Mrs N. McCabe, of Wellington. Officers elected were: patron, Mr H. Cordery; president, Mr H Chaplin; vice-president, Mr M. L. Smith; treasurer, Mr C. H Plimmer; secretary, Mr O. H Houison; auditor, Mr G. J. Tippins; executive, Messrs C. W. Bull, C. Harraway, V. R. Hill, G. Johnson, L. F. McMenamin, C. C. Miller, F. W. Stott, L. A. Strong, J. R. Thompson, B. L. Win, E. V. Wright.
