Town Hall Site

Sir, —Again I regret that “The Press,” of all newspapers, should continue to advocate using the compulsory clauses of the Public Works Act to acquire a site for the town hall, and reiterate that the act should only be invoked to acquire land for urgent public need; then only when no other

reasonable site is obtainable from willing sellers. Anything more is an abuse of power. To suggest the same difficulties would arise elsewhere is unproven until’efforts to obtain other land have been made. Your suggestion that the public are incompetent to decide savours of impertinence. Have the “experts” chosen the club site for appearance or utility? I agree with the former but doubt the latter. It is vital that the site permit very large crowds to view outdoor receptions, etc., quick dispersal, and adequate parking. Even now, the streets between the river and Rolleston avenue are fully parked day or night.— Yours, etc., H. E. RADLEY. July 27, 1960.
