WOMEN CLIMB MOUNTAIN
113 Reach Peak Of 15,190 ft (NX. Press Association—CpppripM) GRESSONEY-LA-TRiNITE - (Italy), July 27. One hundred and thirteen women climbers reached the top of the 15,190 ft Gnifetti Pinnacle on Mountßosa, in the Italian Alps today, out ot the 129 whb started out earlier this week, British United Press Reported. One of those who failed to complete the climb was Vivi Stein, aged 28. datighter of a Neapolitan duchess, .and wife of a German industrialist living in Milan. She was picked up by -an Italian naval helicopter on the mountainside—because her feet hurt. Yesterday she rode part of the way up the mountain on a mule because the new climbing boots she had on Were too tight The climbing of Mount Rosa was to commemorate two women mountaineers who died in the Himalayas last year—Misses Claude Kogan and Claudine van der Straiten, who died on ChoOyu. The only other incident on the climb was reported by 12-year* old TuHo Sala, mascot of the climbers, who was the only male with 30 .’ women sleeping in an alpine Hut last night. “After, midnight they all woke up screaming because one of them had found a mouse under her mattress,*’ he said. “I didn’t sleep any mdre after that,’* he added.
Of the 129 Who started out, nine dropped out on the first stage ’ before! they even started climbing.; Three more remained at the mountain hut this morning before the final climb, and four more—including Vivi Stein—gave up at the Lys Glacier today.
