Boxing AMATEUR TOURNEY
Good Bouts At Show Grounds Showers of coins descending on to the canvas demonstrated the appreciation of the large audience at the Canterbury Boxing Association’s amateur tournament at the Addington Show Grounds on Saturday night. This gesture took place after two paper-weights, R. Bell (Greymouth) and B. Burgess (Christchurch) had spent three rounds in non-stop punching and toe-to-toe engagement. The bout was fought at an incredible pace, and although the young boys concentrated on their efforts to land the most blows in the shortest time, neither neglected the defensive side of the sport. With the first two rounds over, the spectators were treated to a final round of bewildering successive attacks and counter attacks. At the conclusion of the bout showers of coins fell in to the ring. The judges’ decision could not be heard over the applause which continued as both boys left the ring arm in arm, T: Newsome, who last tournament scored a good win over the Otago champion, showed he has retained his form, for on Saturday night, when he met the Timaru middleweight, D. Davies, who had the advantage in reach and height, Newsome staged an intelligent campaign. In the opening round Newsome stepped inside Davies’ long raking lefts and scored to the body with series of jarring blows, switching to the head and as suddenly offering a solid right cross over the other’s lead.
The second round was similar to the first except that Newsome gained the initiative both at long range and close-up boxing. Although having an advantage in points, Newsome did not rest on his laurels, and from the opening bell took command and drove Davies round the ring with fast straight lefts with the follow-up of left and right hooks that shook Davies. Newsome not only won the decision, but also the Perfection Cup for the most scientific display of the evening. Another cup for science, one for the best performance of a visiting boxer, was won by E. McDonald (Greymouth), a fly-weight with not only science but devastating punching power in both hands. In his bout against K. Sheehan (Ashburton), McDonald opened the first fbund stalking his opponent and tagging-him with successive straight lefts and pinning him to the ropes to bring both hands into play. Sheehan, by no means idle during this spell, found McDonald an elusive target with a defence hard to penetrate. The tempo increased in the second round, but again Sheehan received a constant barrage of blows, with McDonald again supplying an answer to all his efforts.
The final round was all McDonald's and Sheehan threw everything into
an attempt to halt proceedings with the same lack of success he enjoyed in two previous rounds.
