STH. CANTERBURY COMPETITION

Zingari Runner-Up For Skinner Cup (From Our Own Reporter) „ TIMARU, July 24. Waimate, which won the, Skinner Cup in 1958, is again South Canterbury’s premier senior Rugby team for the 1960 season. When the final series of matches was completed on Saturday, Waimate beat Temuka, 1912, at Temuka, and Zingari, which had been sharing second place with Temuka, beat Old Boys, 11-3, at Fraser Park. The final points in the Skinner Cup competition are: Waimate 24, Zingari 20, Temuka 18, . Old Boys 14; Celtic 14, Geraldine 13, Mackenzie 7, Star 2. Next Saturday Waimate and Zingari will play for the Beri Cup—competed for each year between the winner and runner-up in the senior grade competition. At Fraser Park Zingari successfully curbed Old Boys usual freerunning style of back play, and with the forwards getting on top in the second half, Zingari had established a firm grip on the game by the finish. The Zingari forwards were in magnificent form in the rucking, winning the ball quickly and well, and the line-out trio of D. Cameron, C. Rogers and K. McCrossan also had the better of the Old Boys specialists in the line-outs. D. Hooke was an intelligent and fast-moving number eight, his anticipation on cover defence halting Old Boys when the defence looked beaten.

Zingari’s Inside backs, R. Millar and J. McMillan, combined smoothly for most of the match. Millar was fast and accurate with his passes, and McMillan’s handling reached a high level. The full-back, R. Bailey, kicked powerfully, and twice he attempted long dropped goals which just missed their mark. The second attempt was a magnificent soaring kick from more than 45 yards, which must have just dropped under the crossbar. Disharmony between N. Taiaroa and K. Williams in the inside positions crippled many of the chances for the Old Boys backs. At centre P. O’Shaughnessy demanded close attention from the defence with his hard and straight running. R. Barlow. until he retired 10 minutes from full-time, played very soundly at full-back, his handling being immaculate, and line kicking accurate and lengthy. The two prop forwards. B. Wilson and A. Galbraith, played very solidly in the Old Boys pack, and R. Atkinson did much valuable work on defence. For Zingari. tries were scored by N. Moffatt, R. Millar, and I. O’Connor, and C. Rogers converted O’Connors try. Barlow kicked a penalty for Old Boys. In the first match at Fraser Park. Celtic had a comfortable 16-3 win over Geraldine. Tries for Celtic were scored by J. O’Donnell (?), R. Stoddart and M. Fitzgerald. P. Hogan, who gave a good display in the unaccustomed position of fullback. kicked two conversions. N. Bain kicked a penalty for Geraldine.
