CRICKET England All Out For 260 In Fourth Test

(N.Z. Press Association—- Copyright) MANCHESTER, July 24. England sought quick runs when the fourth test against South Africa began on its third day at Manchester yesterday and was all out for 260 shortly before the close. South Africa replied with 17 without loss in 25 minutes’ battling before stumps.

England, after winning the toss for the ninth successive time in tests, lost five wickets for 134, but a sixth-wicket stand of 63 in 70 minutes between K. Barrington and J. Parks, made a marked improvement. Barrington was top scorer, with 76, made in two and threequarter hours. He hit eight fours during his innings. Barrington passed his 1000 runs in tests. The pace bowler, N. Adcock, took four wickets, and J. Pothecary three, his first in test cricket but it was L. Goddard Who tied the batsmen down. He took three wickets for 26 in 24 overs.

With two days lost through rain, time was an important factor, and the England batsmen

were always trying to take the initiative. A gem of an innings came from E. Dexter. After England had lost opener, G. Pullar, with only 27 runs scored, Dexter came in to hammer offspinrier, H. Tayfield, for one six and five fours in an exhilarating knock of 38, during which he added 58 runs in even time with R. Subba Row. Adcock struck s big blow for the Springboks by dismissing C. Cowdrey and Subba Row during two overs immediately after lunch. Neither Trueman nor Statham could get much help from the pitch when South Africa batted, and the nearest either J. McGlew or Goddard came to dismissal was when they had a slight misunderstanding about a sharp single. The danger passed, and South Afica finished the day 243 runs behind.
