WOMAN OVERCOME BY SMOKE
Fire In Parnell Home (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 24. An elderly woman, Mrs D. M. Nelson, was nearly suffocated by smoke when fire badly damaged her home at 113 Brighton road. Parnell, on Saturday evening. She was found collapsed across her bed by two firemen, who carried .her clear. She was treated at Auckland Hospital for shock. Mr J. W. Kinder, an elderly guest in the house, had earlier escaped from the blaze. He was seen to stumble down steep steps and to collapse on the front lawn. He was treated at hospital for burnt hands and shock.
The fire broke out about 6.15 pun. Firemen had it under control within minutes of their arrival, and confined the outbreak to the living room. “I smelt smoke and went to try to ring the fire brigade,” Mrs Nelson said, tonight. “But I passed out, and can’t remember anything until I woke up at the hospital.” Mr Kinder said he had been warned by Mrs Nelson and went to investigate the blaze. “I put my head round a door and it was just an inferno.” The fire was noticed by a pass-, mg motorist, who called the brigade.
