SANDSTONE OBJECT FOR REPAIR
May Be Anchor From Maori Canoe "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, July 22. A sandstone object believed to be a stem anchor from the canoe Tainui, of the great migration of 1350, is in Auckland for repair. It‘is in the possession of Mr C. A. P. Randrup, of Brown’s Bay, who has taken a lifelong interest in Maori relics and has lectured on the subject. The stone weighs 51 pounds and is shaped like a fat pair of dumbbells with a snout. Mr Randrup said the stone was found in 1958 half-way down the Kungapari cliff, Waiake Bay, East Coast Bays. He had been keen to find it ever since the famous anthropologist Sir —• Peter Buck searched the area for it 40 years ago. When found, the stone was broken across its waist. It has not been decided what will be done with it.
