HAREWOOD GOLF COURSE
Club’s Case For Land Tenure
Hie Harewood Young People's Golf Club yesterday put its case to a sub-committee of the City
Council's works and airport committee for continued tenure of the course, which is on land owned by the council. Until recently the land was leased to a farmer for frailnc. and he allowed the golf club to Jay out a nine-hole course, later increased to 18 holes. The farmer. Mr F. Shipley, recently decided not to renew his lease, and the council called tenders for iL Consideration of the tenders received was delayed when the club raised the ground that it was giving a service to the public and young persons in particular. Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the committee, said after the meeting yesterday morning that if the club could prove that claim the council would be justified in accepting a tender lower than others.
Mr A. R. Blank, president of the club, assured members of the subcommittee yesterday that the club was a non-profit organisation run essentially for young persons. He said that women were allowed to play on the course from Monday to Friday, and men were allowed to play there on Saturday afternoons when children were engaged In other sports. The adult membership had been closed, but.a proportion of adult members had assisted in enabling the club to maintain and make more improvements. Mr Blank said the elub did not want to be in the hands of a lessee, but sought security of tenure.
. After the meeting, Cr. Guthrey said he and his fellow councillors had been impressed by the argument put forward by the club's representatives. The'whole matter would be put before the council.
