(Nsw Ztaland Press Association) GREYMOUTH, July 22. Television was not harming Rugby attendances in Australia, in fact it was promoting interest the manager of the tour New South Wales Country Rugby team (Mr W. McManis) said yesterday, when the team arrived in Greymouth from Westport. For the first two years the Rugby Union had allowed matches to be televised without a payment being made to the union However, in the last two years a sum had been accepted from the television authorities for the right to televise games. He said the only time when gates were affected was on a very wet day. Apart from that, television had not financially prejudiced the sport. Many persons were becoming more aware of the sport through the television medium. League, however, still, had the greater number of supporters. Though it was a les«er-known sport in Australia, Rugby was gradually expanding and gaining in popularity.
