WAITAKI POWER POTENTIAL
500,000 Kilowatts Still Available
A potential of more than 500,000 kilowatts of hydro-electric power is still available from the Waitaki river, according to the annual report of the Ministry of Works. Development is dependent on demand. The report says topographical surveys covering possible schemes for power development have been carried out over an area of about 70 square miles. Areas covered include alternative 10 mile-long canal and tunnel routes between Lake Pukaki and the Tekapo river, a canal route along the right bank of the Pukaki river to a power station ■one mile downstream from Lake Pukaki A possible flve-mile-long tunnel along the right bank of the Ohau river between the highway crossing and the head of the future Benmore lake was also surveyed, says the report.
