NINE PRIESTS FROM CITY
Roman Catholic Ordinations
Twenty-five men will be ordained in the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church between now and the end of July in various centres of New Zealand. Of these, 15 will serve'in the four dioceses of the country, six as members of the Society of Mary, and four as members of the St. Columban Mission Society. Nine priests, all from the Christchurch diocese, will be ordained at the Cathedral in Barbadoes street on Sunday by the Bishop of Dunedin (the Most Rev. J. P. Kavanagh). They are:—
The Rev. Patrick Crawford, the son of Mr and Mrs J. Crawford, of Christchurch, who was educated at Xavier College and attended Holy Name Seminary in Biccarton, He will serve in Christchurch. The Rev. Patrick Ward, who was born in Gisborne and attended Sacred Heart College, Auckland, and studied for the priesthood at Holy Name Seminary, Christchuch, and Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. He will go to the Auckland diocese. The Rev. Ronald Sharp, who attended Xavier College, Christchurch, and St. Pefer’s College, Auckland, for his secondary education. He took his theological training at the Holy Name Seminary in Christchurch and later at the Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. He will work in the Auckland diocese. The Rev. Michael Anthony Cahill, who attended the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, and completed. his secondary education at the Holy Name Seminary. Christchurch. He studied theology at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. He will work in. the diocese of Wellington. The Rev. Desmond James Darby, who attended St. Bede’s College, Christchurch, and entered the Marist Scholasticate, Greenmeadows. He is a member of the Society of Mary. ■ The Rev. John Francis Healy, also of the Society of Mary, who came from Temuka. He attended St. Bede’s College, Christchurch.
Three St. Columban Mission Society priests are Included. They are:— The 1 Rev. Maurice Patrick O’Connor, who attended Xavier College, Christchurch, and later worked for the Railways Department. He entered St. Columban’s, Essendon, Victoria, and later continued at St Columban’s. Wahroonga and Turramurra, New South Wales. The Rev. Maxwell James Garlick, who attended St. Bede’s College, Christchurch, and entered St. Columban’s, Essendon, Victoria, and studied philosophy and theology at St. Columban’s, Wahroonga and Turramtlrra. The Rev. James Irvine Rathbut, who was bora at Greymouth and received his secondary education at the Marist Brothers. Greymouth. He entered St. Columban’s, Essendon. Victoria, and studied further at Wahroonga and Turramurra.
