Mr Holyoake’s Address
Sir, —"By the Wayside’s” letter is a series of mis-statements. First, the personal exemption for married persons remained at £5OO. Second, if the personal exemption of £375 wiped out all his liability for income tax he was receiving below the award wage. Third, the 25 per cent, rebate (which was never operated under National but only hy Labour in 1958) wiped out only a quarter of income tax, not all of it. Fourth, the index Y>rice for food is almost exactly the same as it was at the end of 1957 (1 point down). Clothing is little if any higher. Does “By the Wayside” exist on. beer, tobacco, and petrol? Is he such a blind and stupid partisan of the National Party that he rejects £468 personal exemption (instead of £375) just because Labour gives it?—Yours, etc.,
A. F. PALMER. Waimate, July 21, 1960.
