ALUMINIUM INDUSTRY
Power At Cost
Suggested * (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 22. The suggestion that the Government should, offer surplus Benmore power to Consolidated Zinc at cost to encourage the firm to establish an aluminium Smelting industry in Southland was made by Mr J. R. Hanan (Opposition, Invercargill) in the House of Representatives today. Mr Hanan said New Zealand was .competing with other places to get the aluminium industry and such an offer would probably induce Consolidated Zinc to come to New Zealand. Mr E. J. Keating (Government. Hastings) said the National Government’s Minister of Works had turned down a proposal that electricity should be sold to private interests for aluminium smelting. Mr .Hanan: That’s not correct. Mr Keating: It’s on the file. Opposition members: No. Mr Keating said the Labour Government had initiated all the measures to establish an aluminium industry.
