Wife Aged 18 Causes Storm (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. July 21. The marriage of 81-year-old Rabbi Toledano. Israel's Minister of Religious Affairs, to an 18-year-old divorcee of "Moroccan descent has set off a political storm in Israel. According to the "Daily Mail” today, the rabbi’s first wife died only three months ago.
Some orthodox religious groups have called the marriage “an outrage against morality and decency.” Readers have deluged newspapers with letters protesting against the marriage. The “Daily Mail” reported that Rabbi Toledano said he would not have married Miriam Sahag had he known it would stir up a storm of public opinion. “But what can I do,” he was quoted as saying, ”1 can't divorce her now.”
The Prime Minister, Mr David Ben-Gurion, has accepted Rabbi Toledano’s resignation ‘in principle, but to save face it was decided yesterday to postpone it until the rabbi and his bride return from a honeymoon in America, the newspaper said.
