Ruanda-Urundi Clashes
(Rec. 8 p.m.) KAMPALA (Uganda), July 21. Fierce inter-tribal fighting is reported to have broken out in Ruanda-Urundi, the United Nations trust territories east of the Congo. The territories are administered by Belgium. Onfe company of Belgian troops has been diverted to RuandaUrundi from the Congo, British United Press said. Another two companies were flown in from Belgium. Tribal fighting broke out between the Ruanda peoples, who want a republic and who plan later to join the Congo, and the Urundis, who want a separate monarchy. Discipline broke down in the Force Publlque. Troops in the: force have now been disarmed. The Administration has formed An armed civilian defence force.
Messages from Belgian civilians from the tightly-censored area say they are awaiting the arrival k of Belgian- troops before leaving for Uganda and Tanganyika. Ruanda-Urundi now is held like a series of strongholds with troops guarding the main centres, but chaos reigns in the countryside, where Contending tribal factions are grappling for supremacy. The Uganda Government last night cancelled a motor convoy of Belgian refugees from the Congo who were to leave for Ruanda today.
