Early Breweries
The disappearance of “Wards” and “Crown” from the labels of bottled beers almost severs a link with brewing from the earliest days of Christchurch settlement, although the brands will continue to be used for locally-produced draught beer. Ward and Company, Ltd, established the first brewery in Canterbury in 1854, and the Crown brewery was also one of the earliest in Christchurch. Both began with an output of only a few hogsheads for local consumption, using Canterbury-grown barley and Nelson hops. There the similarity with modern brewing methods at one big brewery 'almost ends.
