WOOLWORTHS 9 NEW POLICY
“Cutting Out Middleman" SYDNEY, July 7. A plan to “curb the food price spiral by cutting out the middleman” was announced today by Woolworths Ltd., chain retailers. The managing-director (Mr T. Kelly) said the idea was to buy fruit and vegetable crops direct from growers, after advising growers which crops to plant and advancing money, “where necessary,” to ensure production. Mr Kelly was commenting on yesterday’s takeover offer by Woolworths for the largest grocery chain in New South Wales, Matthews, Thompson and Company, Ltd. He said the plan already had begun to operate, and the grocery chain takeover would greatly accelerate its adoption. It was not Woolworth’s intention to establish its own farms, he said. “Our plan is to work in with the producers, not take their land from them.”
