Sportsman’s Notebook Strong Junior Springbok Side For Saturday

The junior Springbok Rugby team to play the All Blacks on Saturday at Durban is a very strong side, and contains players who have already met the tourists.

The full-back, G. Wentzel (Eastern Province), was chosen to play against France two seasons ago, but he withdrew because of an ankle injury. B. van Niekerk (Orange Free State) is said to be one of the best centres in South Africa. He took part in the trials at Pretoria recently, but he was injured, and was not considered for selection for the national side. The other centre, N. Bridger, toured the Argentine with the junior Springboks last year, and should pair well with his wing, D. Bornman (Western Province), who has been nicknamed “wonder boy.” The All Blacks already know the attacking ability of the flyhalf (first five-eighths), A. Prinsloo, of Northern Universities. In the front row will be S. P. Kuhn (Transvaal), one of the best props at "the recent trials. The hooker, J. Wessels (Transvaal), was a junior Springbok last season and also a member of the Sables team which toured England. Wessels captained Transvaal last year. The team is:—

G. Wentzel (E.P.); O. Taylor (N.), B. van Niekerk (0.F.5.), N. Bridger (T.); D. Bornman (W.P.), A. Prinsloo (N.T.); G. Williamson (N.); S. P. Kuhn (T.), J. Wessels (T.), G. van Zyl (0.F.5.), B. Irvine (N.), P. van Zyl (Boland), J. van der Merwe (N.T.), S. J. Botha (N.T), A. Baard (W.P.).

Perth Empire Games The organising council of the 1962 Empire Games at Perth has fixed the date from November 8 to November 17. This date is still subject to confirmation by delegates to a meeting of Commonwealth and Empire countries after the Olympic Games in Rome this year. No variation is expected, however. * * * Available Again The Technical • basketball player, Betty Rowe, who cracked a bone in her foot just before the New Zealand trials at Wel-

lington recently, will play for her club on Saturday. The injury has meant that Miss Rowe, who is one of the best defence in New Zealand, will not represent Canterbury this season.

Ss sj «s Teachers’ College Tournament

The annual winter tournament between Christchurch and Dimedin Teachers’ Colleges will be held on July 13 and 14 at Christchurch. More than 130 students from Dunedin will take part. The programme, which will begin at 9 a.m. next Wednesday, will include indoor basketball, fencing, soccer, hockey, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, and crosscountry running. The annual Rugby match will be played at 2.45 p.m. on Thursday. Christchurch has a good chance of winning several of these sections as many students are provincial representatives in their various sports. ■»
