DIRTY PLAY CHARGES
Strong Denial By Manager ' (W.Z. Press Association—Copurlpnn BLOEMFONTEIN, July 5. The touring New Zealand Rugby team’s manager, Mr T. H. Pearce, today heatedly denied charges of “savage and dirty play” levelled against them by a newspaper in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, the American Associated Press reported. The charge was made by the Salisbury “Standard” on Saturday’s match when the All Blacks beat Rhodesia 29-14. Mr Pearce said: “Whatever the Rhodesian newspaper critic might say, we are convinced we left many friends in Rhodesia and our opponents are included among them.
“Far from the Rhodesian players being upset about our tactics, their captain. Des van Jaarsveldt, afterwards publicly recommended his players to follow the methods and enthusiasm of our forwards. “The tactics of the All Blacks in this country are exactly those followed by all New Zealand Rugby players and we don’t propose to change them now because of ill-informed critics,” he said.
