SUPPLIES THOUGHT SUFFICIENT

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 6. The Government would not hesitate to import potatoes from Australia if supplies here were insufficient, the Minister of Industries .and Commerce (Mr Holloway) said in the House of Representatives today. But, he said, the Potato Board considered there were quite enough potatoes in New Zealand. Mr N. L Shelton (Opposition, Rangitikei) had asked what the Government was doing to ensure an adequate supply of potatoes at a reasonable price. He said potatoes were selling at 9d a lb in Auckland and Wellington. Mr Holloway said potatoes were being advertised in Auckland at 7d a lb and were being sold in Wellington at 4d a lb. The recent arrival in Auckland of 20,000 sacks of potatoes from the South Island should bring the price down, he added.
