INSTRUCTIONS ON RUCKING
Craven Denies Change [From GRAEME JENKINS, N.ZJ>.A. Staff Correspondent! SALISBURY, June 30. A denial that there has been a change in instruction to. South African referees on rucking was made today by the president of the South African Rugby Board (Dr. D. H. Craven) in a special interview. The referee of the match played on Wednesday, when asked afterwards why there were so many scrums—there were 70 scrums in the match—said he had been sent a circular by the South African board that rucks must be blown up much more quickly than they had been and that a set scrum must be formed. Asked for his comments on this statement, Dr. Craven said a circular had been sent out to all referees about the question last year and had been sent again this year, but before the season started. Perhaps the referee had only just had it drawn to his attention, but there certainly was no recent instruction, he said. Later Dr. Craven and the coach of the New Zealand team (Mr J. L. Sullivan) had a meeting at which it is believed refereeing interpretations was the main subject of discussion.
