TABLE TENNIS IN DUNEDIN
CTRONG Canterbury table tennis teams are in Dunedin today to take part in the quadrangular tournament among Otago. Southland. Canterbury and South Canterbury. In this contest men's and women's teams play separate round-robin matches, and the winner is determined on the combined results. Narrow Win
Last year Canterbury won this tournament, mainly through the strength of its women players. Canterbury’s women won their section of the contest with ease, but the men lost, 7-5, in their Anal match against Otago, after beating South Canterbury and Southland. The combined results gave Canterbury a win. Canterbury’s men’s team is stronger this year with the inclusion of J. Armstrong, who did not take part in last year’s contest Armstrong held the South Island title in 1958 and 1959, and was beaten only by the narrowest of margins in this year's event last week. Armstrong will be supported by V. N. Brightwell, T. R. D. Flint, N. B. Radford, and K F. Stevenson, all of whom played in last year’s event With a new top player, and the others moving
down one position, the Canterbury men's team could do well this year. On the other hand, Canterbury’s women’s team is not as strong as that which took part in last year’s contest. For today’s matches Mrs J. Shadbolt and Miss C. Halliday will replace Mrs P. Purdon and Miss D. Donald, both of whom have retired from competitive table tennis. Miss J. Williamson is not available as she will be playing in the international match against the Japanese at Auckland this evening. Miss T. May, Miss B. Taylor and Miss J. Ward-Holmes complete the Canterbury team. Good Form With the return of Mrs J. Magorian, Otago looks v try strong in the women. Miss R. Cameron beat both Mrs Shadbolt and Mrs May in the North Otago championships two weeks ago, and she and Mrs Magorian wfll be well supported by Miss V. Braumann and Miss P. Crowe. Otago will be strong again in the men with B. A. Foster and J. Dougall. while if W. T. Scott or W. J. Fogarty plays Otago should be assured of winning this section.
