WEEK-END SPORTS FIXTURES
Senior Series Ends
In Hurunui Rugby Teams in the Hurunui Rugby Sub-union’s senior competition will play the final games of the series tomorrow. Culverden appears to be in a fairly secure position, having a lead of two points clear of the second team. United, though the lead is not so substantial as it first appears for two points are awarded for a win. In the last games played, United gave Culverden its first defeat of the season.
While Rugby is often an unpredictable sport, it would be surprising on form shown earlier in the season to see Culverden suffer a reverse at the hands of Waiau in the final game. Should Culverden be beaten, however, and United wins its match against Cheviot, then the two top teams will be level and in all ’ probability a play-off would be required. The game between Cheviot and United could be a very interesting one, for only one point separates them on the championship table. In the first round of matches. Cheviot beat United by 12 points to 8, but after having a bad patch when it lost two successive games United has been showing good form again and if at full strength' it should be a difficult team to beat. The third game will be between the two bottom teams, Kaikoura and Banner.
The North Canterbury senior competition still has six sets of games to go. In this week’s games the competition leader. Rangiora. is drawn against the bottom team, Woodend, which has been showing improvement but a surprise win by it is not expected. Other games tomorrow are Ohoka v. Kowai; Loburn v. Glenmark; Amberley V. Oxford. Basketball In the North Canterbury basketball competitions the main senior game is expected to be the match between Oxford and Rangiora. One point separates these two teams which are second and third equal in the competition respectively. When they met in the first round the result was a draw, 27-aIl. The leader of the competition, Fernside, will meet Ohoka and Woodend. third equal with Rangiora, plays Waikuku. Matches in the Hurunui competition are: Culverden v. Cheviot; Waiau v. Waikari; Hawarden, a bye. A hare drive has been organised by the Fernside Cricket Club for today, assembling at the Fernside Memorial Hall at 9 a.m Tomorrow afternoon a Rugby match will take place between A company (Rangiora) and D Company (Timaru), of the First Canterbury Regiment, at the Rangiora Show Grounds. Today, the Rangiora Golf Club will hold the first qualifying round of its olub championships.
