North Canterbury News Quality Impresses Judges At Rangiora Poultry Show

Judges commented favourably on the general standard of exhibits at the North Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club’s annual show," which opened in the Drill HaU, Rangiora, yesterday, although in some classes they would have liked to have seen more entries. The total entry of about 600, was an improvement on last year’s figure of 568. Several New Zealand and South Island championships were decided in conjunction with the show, which will conclude today. The number of entries in \ the standard heavy breeds was good, said the judge (Mr T. Findlay, Riccarton). and the support given the Hamburgs was particularly so. The winning Hamburg pullet, exhibited by R. I. Vallance, Sefton, was “as good as anything seen for a long time.” The ducks were oustanding in both numbers and quality, Mr Findlay said, and a duck took the prize for being the best utility bird in the show. This bird was owned by Mrs J. R. Bruce, Ashburton. The number of entries was somewhat disappointing in the game bantams, said Mr C. C. Minty (Christchurch), but the quality throughout was well up to standard. The best bantam went to an Old English Game snangled hen belonging to T. A. Mitchell. Other birds that appealed were a black-red cock by J. R. Bloomfield., and a Brichin cockerel belonging to I. H. Lee.

He was impressed with the winning Australorp pullet exhibited by Eh W. Tippins, said the judge of the utility heavy breeds (Mr C. Bartley, Christchurch). This bird was runner-up to the best utility bird in the show. The Barred Rock section was well patronised and the winning cockerel exhibited by E. Sonne was impressive.

The quality of the junior classes was. excellent for juniors, he said, but here he would like to see more entries. The quality was such that an award was made for the best bird in the junior classes. The entry in the fancy pigeon classes was pleasing for a country show, said Mr G. A. Gough (Christchurch), and the .quality quite good. Tumblers were the best section, and a fine yellow self shown by C. A. Gallop was awarded the special prize for the best and a net black self hen by the same exhibitor gained Jhe award for the best opposite sex. The best pigeon in the show was a homer exhibited by C. C- Minty, Christchurch. The Nuns were good inequality and the juvenile section was really stronger than the open sections. Results were:— New Zealand Championships Male standard Sussex, H. R. Warren; male standard Orpington, cinnamon or buff, G. C. Gordon; female standard Plymouth Rock, H. R. Warren; male utility Ancona, R. W. Davie; female Rhode Island white, C.
