SALE OF NYLONS IN BRITAIN
Women Bought 11 Prs. Each Last Year (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) ’ LONDON, June 29. Nearly 245 million pairs of stockings were sold in Britain last year—just over 11 pairs a woman—and 95 per cent, of then) were nylon. The figures for the first quarter of this. year are nearly 10 per cent, up on 1959, equal to 12.4 pairs of nylons a woman if the trend holds throughout 1960. Commenting on these figures; based on several recent surveys, the women’s editor of the “Financial Times” says that in spite of rumours that saturation point has' already been reached, the figures for nylons look like continuing to rise. In all age groups. 30 denier stockings are losing favour to the finer 15 ' denier type, which are less hard-wear-ing and which need more frequent replacement. “But.” she said, “even when the market does reach saturation point, which is unlikely to be for a few years, women’s necessity to replace stockings will keep sales at a healthy levelenough to justify the Capital expenditure on plant and research io which they are’ all subjected at present—and which they feel to be essential to hold their own against the threa't of Continental and United States competition in the hosiery field.”
