Driving Licences
Sir, —It appears that, with only three days of the current period to go, thousands of motorists in this area had failed to renew their driving licences. The only possible explanation, in the vast majority of cases, must be sheer laziness coupled with a complete indifference to the legal consequences involved. There is no excuse for the former because the issuing authority has obviously taken a lot of trouble, as in the case of car registration, to make the procedure as simple as possible—far simpler, for instance than it used to be in England. As regards the legal consequences of evasion, however, the position vis a vis England, seems to be reversed. There, at any rate in the matter of car -registration, it was a safe bet . that, the day after the end of a period, the police would be stopping cars to check up on it, and incidentally perhaps have a look at driving licences as June 29, 1960.
