HANDLEBARS ON CYCLES
Some Considered Dangerous '“Satellite searchers”—bicycle handlebars turned at an angle to the frame and pointing skywards —are worrying Transport Department officers and the department district officer (Mr D. L. Hogan) because the crazy handlebar trend is a current fad among the young in and around Christchtirch. Mr Hogan said yesterday afternoon: “This craze has got us worried mainly because it is a fashion among schoolchildren tn their teens. They get the handlebars and turn them ' to point heavenwards.” Upturned handlebars had been pointed out to him by two traffic inspectors who gave road safety instruction in schools, he said. “There are three dangers in this craze. If the ‘bicycle has handbrakes the brakes will not work properly, the rider is likely to get a handlebar stuck into a sleeve when turning and if a cyclist falls off there could be bad injuries. Mr Hogan said that he had heard of a cyclist in the North Island being badly hurt because his bicycle had ‘‘satellite searcher” handlebars.
