RECRUITING 01 TEACHERS
137 Appointed In Britain
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 24. The campaign to recruit postprimary teachers from the United Kingdom resulted in more than 700 applications being received, said the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) today. "For various reasons many of the applicants were not considered suitably qualified while others withdrew or deferred their applications, but I am pleased to say that 137 appointments have resulted,” he said.
Problems relating to the teacher shortage were being solved, said Mr Skoglund. “However, I am sure these teachers from the United Kingdom will provide a .most 1 welcome addition to the staffs of our post-primary schools and their arrival will be most keenly awaited.”
A few of the had already arrived in New Zealand, but most would not be available until August, the end of the academic year in England. "Arrangements have been, made by the Government for a charter aircraft to bring up. to 95 x of the teachers to New Zealand early in September. The others, mostly married men with families, will arrive by sea about the same time.
"The teachers have been given permanent appointments and are required to sign a bond agreeing to serve the State education service for a period of at least three years. The other conditions of their appointments are the same as for New Zealand teachers. “Most of the appointees are graduates or possess some equivalent qualification in subjects such as home science or physical education. A fair number have qualifications in mathematics and science. All are well qualified for the positions in which they were selected.”
